Red hot Dinamo Riga are back home for a game and would look to extend their winning streak. A lone home game in the Latvian capital means a chance to get to four victories in a row. The opponent that has arrived won’t be an easy task - Metallurg has been by far one of the most hot if not the hottest team early on in the season. Dinamo haven’t had much luck against their opponent as of late having lost four in a row at home to Metallurg and their last win dating back to December of 2016. If there’s a chance to take two points at home it would be right now and Riga were confident that they can achieve that.

Metallurg tried to grab the thread early on and they succeeded.. Unfortunately with 8:56 left in the period Dinamo’s Machovsky was beaten twice in a short moment. For the second time after making an athletic save - it appeared to be 2:0 to the guests and a lengthy review - the referees decided to call it a good goal as the goalie was beaten in what was described a legal manner - players hand wasn’t used as the puck crossed the line.

Riga tried to answer right back but the returnee Rudolf Ceverny was stopped point blank. Machovsky had once again gotten involved on many occasions. It didn’t get any easier - Gints Meija was sent to the penalty box for cross-checking - yet Dinamo did kill it off staying within a two goal distance. Emile Poirier got Riga back into the game as the first period ended and the score was 1:2 after twenty.

Although Brandon Gormley was in the penalty box as the second period began Metallurg power-play was negated with a penalty of their own. Once it was time for Riga to play on man advantage they once again took the opportunity and scored - this time it was team veteran Martins Karsums.

The visitors were okay with the high-scoring affair extending it further - Nikolai Goldobin took his chance and put his team back up by a goal. His team followed up with yet another dangerous opportunity however, Machovsky stopped that to keep the score close. The dominant effort turned out more dominant - all of a sudden they were up by two meaning that the home side would need at least two in the third to earn a point.

Counters were tur way to go for Dinamo as Metallurg continued pressuring - Hunter Shinkaruk went on to battle the goalie one-on-one and was turned away. Chibisov went back to the other end and couldn’t capitalise on a very similar scoring chance. Riga did what they had to do and struck unexpectedly - Tiivola took advantage of Pashnin’s mistake and once again it was a one goal game.

Fourth line charm for the home team - Filips Buncis drew a much needed penalty giving Riga hope that tie game isn’t far out of reach - they didn’t capitalise there but the power-play handed Riga control and Radil got the equaliser with 4:29 left to play in the third.

A golden opportunity for Riga with 1:19 left in the period - Goldobin was sent to the penalty box. Riga couldn’t take the win in regulation, meaning that the game would be decided with extra hockey - this time shootout would be the decider. Metallurg were the better team and earned a victory 2:1 in shootout and 5:4 in the game.

“It’s good to earn points on a consistent basis, it’s good to always try and win. Even today we pulled the game out of the hat and we managed to get the result. You have to earn everything.” Martins Karsums - a veteran forward said after the game. “It’s too bad that we couldn’t take the victory in the shootout. The Good thing is that we don't give up and we always play till the end. We shouldn’t hang our heads down now.” He added. When asked about why the team had to attempt a comeback he knew what he had to say - “In the first we weren’t ready for such speed, but I won’t say that we played badly. We had our opportunities but we couldn’t take advantage of them. But as I said - we showed character and we fought hard. Good job by the team.” Why didn't his team win in the shootout? “Clean ice, we didn’t have clean ice. I don’t understand the new thing with just dry cleaning. It has to be cleaned properly.”

‘’In the second something happened and the team found extra strength, they didn’t let their hands down, they stood up for one another and I want to thank the team for that. We had chances in overtime and it’s sad that we didn’t use them properly.’’ Sergei Zubov said in the post game press conference. Dinamo has scored four goals in many of the games that they have played lately - ‘’We always want to score more, it’s good that we do as it is but we also allow many goals against and we still have to work on that. We bring goals for ourselves.’’ Nikolajs Jelisejevs was left out of tonight's game but Dinamo’s head coach didn’t want to say anything specific describing it as day-to-day.
